Biography

Ty "Legend" Brooks did not choose portraiture — portraiture chose him. Growing up in Chicago in the 1970s, he discovered that a pencil and a blank sheet of paper were the most honest tools he had ever held. By the time he was a teenager, neighbors were paying him to render their faces. By the time he was twenty, he had found his life's work.

For thirty-five years, Brooks has practiced a discipline that most artists abandon: the slow, deliberate, uncompromising rendering of the human face in monochrome. No color to hide behind. No texture to distract. Only line, tone, and the accumulated intelligence of decades of looking.

His subjects have included Grammy-winning musicians, Hall of Fame athletes, Fortune 500 executives, heads of state, and private collectors who understand that a photograph captures a moment — but a drawing captures a soul. Each commission begins with a conversation and ends with a work that is meant to outlast its subject.

Brooks works exclusively in three mediums: graphite, charcoal, and pen & ink. Each demands a different kind of attention. Graphite rewards patience. Charcoal rewards boldness. Pen & ink rewards certainty. Together, they form the vocabulary of a career built on the belief that drawing is the most direct form of human expression.

"I don't draw faces," Brooks has said. "I draw time. Every line is a decision. Every shadow is a choice. When I'm done, what you're looking at is not the person — it's the conversation I had with them on paper."
